Many community members have noticed that the Floating Dwarf Shrub Bog located in a cove on Woodward Reservoir has changed location since the July 2023 flooding. Here at Farm and Wilderness Conservation, we shared concern with those who reached out asking for more information.
Recently, we have been in contact with the State of Vermont Watershed Management Division to gather some additional information about the floating bog and to inform them of the current situation and positioning.
The Dwarf Shrub Bog is an unusual natural community that contains uncommon plant species. This example of a Dwarf Shrub Bog also happens to be a floating bog that was formed by glacial movements. It is officially designated as a protected Class II Wetland by the VT Department of Environmental Conservation as well as a protected S2 Natural Community by the VT Fish & Wildlife Department.
After a recent consultation and site visit with the State of Vermont Wetlands Bio assessment Program, it was recommended that the floating dwarf shrub bog be left alone for the time being. Any kind of movement or alteration would require a permit but due to the bog’s Class II Wetland status and S2 Natural Community status, such a permit would be impossible to obtain. Therefore, alternation or movement is not a permissible activity within the constraints of the bog’s current ecological status.
We are grateful to have so many community members that care about conservation and have such admiration for the natural world. At this time, all we as humans can do is observe and admire nature in action. We will keep in contact with the Watershed Management Division regarding the bog’s positioning.
